Chapter 20: 19

"What the hell?! Why did you remove the headphones?"

"It's time to get serious. And how can you be enjoying the music without me?"

I put on the headphones and grin at her.

"You have good taste in music. I thought you didn't like Naija music."

"You must have forgotten that I appreciate good music dumbass."

I raise my eyebrows at her. I know that she likes good music, but Of Lagos is not her kind of music.

"Of lay lay lay" I stare at her pointedly.

"Talk na." She rolls her eyes at my command and I notice the smile trying to creep up her face.

Somehow we end up dancing in the middle of my room laughing like we're little kids again.

"Why did you stop laughing like this?"

"How do you know that I don't laugh?"

"I noticed."

"So you are always watching me?"

"Yes"

"Let's start the project already." I watch as she gathers the materials changing the subject.

Almost an hour later, I'm so close to hitting the book on my partner's head.

"How can you not know the atomic number of the transition elements? You have exams in few months

time."

"I told you I don't want any tutoring. I don't need another Chemistry teacher to frustrate my life."

"How will you teach the class if you know nothing about it?"

"I'll just read it at home. I know I'm not as smart as you, but I'm not totally dumb."

"I never said so."

"You implied it."

I take a deep breath. Olanna has always been a really stubborn person and with my lack of patience

we always end up bickering like now. I raise up my hand in surrender.

"Let's take a break. Then we'll just work on the cardboard paper. Make sure you study the topic at

home."

"Where's my phone?"

"I'm going to get snacks."

When I come back with chips and sodas she is on my bed again.

"I should have been spending time with Tola right now."

I frown slightly before placing the tray on my desk.

"I didn't force you to come here."

She rolls her eyes at my comment but says nothing. We spend the next hour silently working on the

cardboard paper and stuffing chips into our mouths.

Denise is almost leaving when Camille decides to make a visit to my room.

"Oh hey Camille."

"Kelechi please lend me your markers."

She is totally ignoring Denise. Maybe they fought or something.

"Gotta go. Bye Kaycee, Camille."

I follow Denise to the door and open it for her.

"You can't even give me a hug?"

"Kelechi, I have a boyfriend."

Oh what did I do to this girl to deserve this?

"Just a hug oo. Bye jhorr. See you tomorrow."

My plan is going more smoothly than I thought.
