Chapter 9 Boyfriend!

She got expelled?

“Is it?” Amanda looked Rae Yan with unusual calm.

She was not Mia and she watched the incident and everyone involved as an outsider; Mia would have felt so panic and sad as Rae Yan expected, but not Amanda.

The unusual coolness and indifference of Amanda, sure enough, made Rae Yan feel uneasy; with her eyess evasive and hands firmly clenching at the backpack, she turned to look at Ali.

"Why, aren't you worried? I was so worried that I came out looking for you." It took Rae Yan a while to speak, watching Mia and squeezing out an awkward smile.

Ali rested his hands on the shoulder of Amanda and seemed not to feel comfortable leaving her and Rae to talk alone; but Amanda pushed him away and walked toward Rae Yan against his wishes on purpose. She held Rae Yan’s arm saying: “you have got to accompany to the president tonight, I don’t wanna get myself fired; I hate to leave you guys.”

With that, Amanda looked back at Ali and smiled at him.

Ali responded her with a smile, his eyes curved.

One thing Amanda felt good about was the independence and self focus of Rae Yan; she was leading the way in front while she and Ali was following behind. She could use her guide right now.

"Mia, where were you last night?" Still, Rae Yan repeated the same question as if determined to get a result out of her mouth.

Amanda, with her expression unchanged, looked at her and smiled. "Where do you think I've been? You must be so worried?"

Mia's voice was so soft and tender that no one should have detected any harm from it, but still the lighthearted rhetorical question was making Rae Yan, who must be at her 17 or 18 years old as well, feeling uncomfortable; she tried to avoid the eye contact with her.

As if to do this on purpose, Rae Yan said: "Yesterday, after school, people saw you get into Mr. Hu's car and they said you were a mistress of his. Well, Ali was very sad and had been looking for you for the whole night. President called in Madam Gorski last night this morning when you did not show up in the class; and when Madam Gorski got back, she said that you were expelled.”

So that was it.

Amanda thought for a second, adding, "You're my best friend. Do you believe in what they said?"

“Best friend”? ! As if being stung by the flattery, Rae Yan bit her lip and didn't speak; she suddenly stopped and pushed Amanda forward. "There it is, the president's office; I'm going to the class!"

Then she turned around and walked away without looking back.

Amanda looked at Rae Yan's slender waist beneath her large hip-hop dress and smiled with the self- aware irony. As the “best friend”, she had done enough for her.

“President’s office”! Amanda raised her hand and knocked.

"Come in." A familiar voice of a middle-aged man's voice came through the door. Ever since her death, Amanda had been so sensitive to sound that she was positively certain she had heard it in the hotel hallway last night.

Amanda opened the door and walked in.

At the moment he saw her, the middle-aged man sitting behind the desk stiffened his body and his face turned cold. "You? How dare you come here?!"

Amused, Amanda grinned; she closed the door behind her and took a couple of steps forward, facing the man behind the large desk: “Didn’t we just meet last night; didn’t you just say how beautiful, young and tender I was? Well, didn’t you feel happy to see me stand here in front of you?”

President Liu snapped: "Mia, you've been expelled! Call your parents to pick you up and take you home! We don't need students like you here!"

Amanda, covering her mouth trying to smooth out her laugh and with a feigned look of grievance in her eyes, looked at President Liu and cut to the chase: "President Liu, there are three reasons you can't expell me."

Frowning, president Liu asked "What reasons?"

"Firstly, I was taken out by you, president of the high school, and now the whole school knows about it. Even if I am seventeen, not exactly a little girl, but I am still a teenager girl; if this were to get out, it would not only ruin your position as the headmaster, but also the reputation of the school!" Amanda tilted her head to look at President Liu. Then she said:

"Secondly, that Mr. Hu seems to have a lot of business dealings with President Liu? The Art building was one of his construction, right? I am but a thank-you gift from you to Mr. Hu...Thank him for what? I am pretty curious what good did you get out of it? I will try to find out after I get expelled; I am pretty sure I am not the only victim. Can’t wait to see how many secrets and dirty deals are to exposed?!”

President Liu was startled to see the changes of her; the always introverted and timid teenager girl was now calm, clear-headed and full of courage and listing pros and cons for him? Before he could say anything, Amanda continued,

“Thirdly, Aaron Gu of Gu family seemed to be very content with my company last night; he even drove me to the school this morning after giving me a lot of money. Well, I am pretty sure he would come back for me in not time; what do you think he would do if he doesn’t see me in the school?”

President Liu could not keep his head any longer at the fourth. Yes, last night she was with the Mr. Gu-- the one who did not dare to provoke by any means-- whole night; and that probably explained the sudden attitude change of hers.

Amanda had never been a soft woman to deal with; seeing him sweating heavily, Amanda strode forwards and handed him the tissue, mocking: “President Liu, wipe away your sweat...This summer is scorching hot and would only get hotter. Cool down your AC, the school is not so broke, at least not yet!”

Before he could take over the tissue, Amanda dropped it in front of him and strode toward the door.

No sooner had her hand reached the handle than Amanda turned back, whipping her black ponytail nicely in the air. "President Liu," she said, smiling, "I'm going back to class, if everything is okay.”

Greeting her outside the door was the heat of the hot summer day; the office was left silence with the President sitting there slack-jawed; the smile Amanda wore the whole process faded away and was replaced with a solemnity; in the end, she was not longer the arrogant Lady Juan, but the timid and humble Mia, and she had to protect herself by bragging about her relationship with Aaron Gu...

Amanda felt herself suffocated; her high-heeled shoes stamped on the instep of his feet so fiercely that Ali sprung away and barked angrily: “Mia, are you nuts! I am your boyfriend! You did not want to sleep with you all the time and now not even kiss? You are not longer a virgin, then stop acting like one!”
